The hazard perception test (HPT) for learners was introduced in 2002 and is taken immediately after the first (Multiple-Choice) part of the theory test.

For the hazard perception test, you will be shown a series of 14 video clips on a computer. These show real life driving scenes, incorporating various types of developing hazards – e.g. another vehicle beginning to pull out into your path.

In total, there are 15 hazards for you to spot, because one of the 14 clips will feature two hazards.

To score points for this part of the test, you have to click the button on the mouse as soon as you see the hazard starting to develop. The earlier you click, the more points you will get. The maximum number of points for each hazard if you click nice and early is five. The later you leave it, the less points you will get.

The highest possible score for the HPT part of the theory test is 75. To pass, you need to score at least 44.

You must achieve the required pass mark for both the multiple choice questions and the hazard perception test (at the one sitting) in order to pass your theory test.

Once you have passed your theory test you can, once ready, apply to take the Practical Driving test.
